Overview
EdgeSage is built local-first. The steel database, comparator, Steel Wizard, and Angle Coach all work fully offline and need no account, and nothing you enter leaves your device unless you sign in. Signing in is optional — with Sign in with Apple or a one-time code sent to your email — and unlocks cloud sync of your knives and sessions across your devices, submitting anonymous community field reports, and the AI features (chat, photo steel identification, custom recipes and spoken walkthroughs). The sections below describe what we collect when you use those signed-in features.
This website publishes the public Steel Leaderboard: aggregated, anonymous field reports of how steels held up. Individual reporters are never identified, and stats stay hidden until five reporters have spoken.
EdgeSage is also offered on Google Play for Android. The steel database, comparator, Wizard, and Angle Coach still work fully offline with no account. If you sign in, cloud sync and AI features use the same providers described below. Android purchases and subscriptions are handled by Google Play. We never see your card details.
Information we collect
- Account information. If you sign in, we collect your email address and an account identifier to authenticate you and link your synced data to you. If you use Sign in with Apple, Apple may give us a private relay address instead of your real one.
- Knife & session data. The knives you add, the steels you assign them, your sharpening session history, and any knife or session photos you attach. This is stored on your device first; it's sent to our servers only if you're signed in, so it can sync across your devices. Photos are downscaled and stripped of EXIF metadata (including location) before upload.
- Photos for steel identification. If you use the photo-ID feature (signed in), the image is sent to our server, which relays it to our AI provider for analysis and returns a result. We don't use these photos for any other purpose.
- AI assistant messages. If you use the chat, custom-recipe or spoken-walkthrough features (signed in), the text you send is relayed through our server to our AI provider to generate a reply. We don't use it for any other purpose.
- Community leaderboard submissions. A steel and a performance rating. Public leaderboard entries are anonymous — they aren't linked to your account in anything visible to other users.
- Purchase information. Subscriptions and purchases are handled entirely by Apple's App Store. We never see your card details — our server receives only Apple's signed purchase record, which it verifies so your Pro status follows your account across devices.
- Diagnostics. Standard iOS crash and performance data, only if you've opted in via Apple's system prompts.
How we use it
- To run the comparator, Wizard, and Angle Coach.
- To sync your knives, session history and photos across your own devices, if you're signed in.
- To answer your questions, identify steels from photos, and generate recipes and walkthroughs through the AI assistant, if you use it.
- To power the community Steel Leaderboard from aggregated, anonymized reports.
- To process purchases and manage your Pro entitlement through Apple.
- To respond to support requests you send us.
Third parties
We work with a small number of service providers, each scoped to a specific job:
- Supabase — hosts our database, file storage for synced photos, and authentication.
- xAI (Grok) — powers the AI chat, photo-based steel identification, custom recipes and spoken walkthroughs for signed-in users, accessed only through our own server-side proxy. The underlying API key never ships inside the app.
- Apple — processes all App Store purchases and subscriptions, and provides Sign in with Apple if you choose it.
We don't use an ad network, and we don't sell your data to anyone.
Your choices
- Use the entire steel database, comparator, Wizard, and Angle Coach with no account at all.
- Sign out at any time; your knives and sessions stay on the device.
- Delete an individual knife, or your whole account, from within the app at any time. Deleting your account wipes your synced knives, sessions and photos from our servers.
- Request deletion or ask any question by emailing [email protected].
Children's privacy
EdgeSage is not directed at children under 13, and we don't knowingly collect personal information from children under 13.
Changes to this policy
We may update this policy as the app changes. We'll update the date at the top of this page, and we'll call out material changes inside the app.
